This 7-day expedition offers an action-packed, highly scenic journey across Kilimanjaro’s high western flank. Starting with a 4x4 transfer up the mountain to the Shira Ridge, the route winds across the volcanic gravel of the vast Shira Caldera to Shira 1 and Shira 2 camps. From there, climbers join the main southern circuit, ascending toward Lava Tower for critical altitude adaptation before descending into the lush Barranco Valley, traversing Karanga and Barafu, and culminating in a midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak.

Day 01 :

Shira Gate to Simba Camp (Shira 1):Moorland Zone | Distance: ~8 km | Time: 4-5 hours.

07:30 AM – 10:30 AM: Morning pickup from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha followed by a scenic 3-hour drive in a private safari vehicle through rural Chagga villages and timber plantations up to Shira Gate (3,600m). Complete park registration, permit processing, and crew introductions.
10:30 AM – 03:30 PM: Begin your trek across the open heather and moorland terrain of the Shira Ridge. The trail climbs steadily along a volcanic track with sweeping views looking back toward Mount Meru floating over the western clouds. Day 02 :

Simba Camp via Shira Cathedral to Shira 2 Camp:Moorland Zone | Distance: ~10 km | Time: 5-6 hours.

07:00 AM – 08:00 AM: Wake up to hot washing water at your tent flap, followed by a hot cooked breakfast of eggs, toast, sausages, porridge, and fresh fruit.
08:00 AM – 02:00 PM: Embark on an acclimatization trek across the floor of the ancient Shira Caldera toward the dramatic rock monolith of Shira Cathedral (3,895m). Day 03 :

Day 04 :

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp:Alpine Desert Zone | Distance: ~5 km | Time: 4-5 hours.

08:00 AM – 01:00 PM: Conquer the famous Barranco Wall, a 257-meter cliff face requiring fun, non-technical hand-and-foot holds under expert guide supervision. Once at the top, traverse rolling ridges and dry desert gullies across the Karanga Valley.
01:00 PM onwards: Arrive at Karanga Camp (4,040m) by midday for a hot, nourishing lunch. Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and engaging in light stretching. Enjoy an early evening dinner and breathtaking alpine stargazing.

Day 05 :

Karanga Camp to Barafu Base Camp:Alpine Desert Zone | Distance: ~4 km | Time: 3-4 hours.

08:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Set out on a steady, controlled uphill climb across exposed alpine scree ridges leading directly to Barafu Base Camp (4,673m), your final staging camp.
12:30 PM onwards: Arrive by early afternoon for a hot lunch. Organize your thermal layers, check headlamp batteries, and rest. Because the summit push begins at midnight, an early dinner is served at 05:00 PM followed by mandatory sleep.

Day 06 :

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak & Down to Mweka Camp:Summit & Arctic Zone | Distance: ~17 km total | Time: 11-15 hours.

11:30 PM (Day 5 night) – 06:00 AM: Midnight wake-up call for hot tea, coffee, and biscuits. Begin your summit assault under the stars, climbing slowly (pole pole) up loose scree switchbacks to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim, then continuing along the snow-capped rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise.

Day 07 :

07:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Enjoy a final breakfast on the mountain followed by a heartfelt tipping and gratitude ceremony with your mountain crew. Embark on a scenic 3-hour descent through the wet rainforest trail to Mweka Gate (1,640m).
